Disney expects to lose from $160 to $190 million on The Lone Ranger, the company revealed in its conference call Tuesday, according to Variety. The hit to earnings will occur in the quarter ending in September, the company said.
Marvel movies were a bright spot in Disney’s earnings, with Iron Man at $1.2 billion, outperforming the first two installments as the #2 Marvel film ever, behind The Avengers. Disney CEO Robert Iger said that the studio thinks the success of The Avengers helped propel the third Iron Man to new heights.
Iger said Disney is only at "the tip of the iceberg" in building franchises from Marvel characters, but also said "you can’t go to the well too often" by making too many sequels. The studio believes Guardians of the Galaxy will introduce a group of new Marvel characters to the public.
