Disney has made a recent decision not to initiate or renew slot machine licensing agreements for Marvel and Lucasfilm properties, according to The New York Times.   The change comes as Disney battles a move to allow resort casinos in Florida, arguing that such resorts would be contrary to Florida’s family-friendly brand.  Supporters of Florida casino gambling had argued that Disney’s opposition was hypocritical, because it allowed Marvel and Lucasfilm properties to be used for gambling.

The elimination of Marvel and Star Wars slot machines and online slots eliminates one such conflict, but does not address the use of Marvel characters in state lottery scratch-off tickets, including Idaho, Texas, and Colorado.

This isn’t the first time the use of geek properties on slot machines has been deemed contrary to the brands’ qualities.  The Tolkien estate has been arguing in litigation with Saul Zaentz, Warner Bros, and new Line that slot machines based on Lord of the Rings are outside the scope of the estate’s agreements and harmful to the brand (see "Court Rules Against Tolkien Estate").
