It’s an iconic step for any children’s property to be immortalized in the archetypal (if disposable) form of a McDonald’s Happy Meal, but when the megacorp decides to limit the gender appeal of the toys based on a show lauded for its universal appeal, someone is going to notice. McDonalds is only releasing "boy" characters from Adventure Time, and pairing it with a pink-and-pretty Paul Frank "girls" property. One of the bloggers over at The Braiser noticed, and pointed out that the female characters of Adventure Time (and there are a lot of them) are popular in their own right.
Most recently in the comics world, the OGN Adventure Time: Pixel Princesses (see "New 'Adventure Time' OGN") sold though its initial print run at the distributor level before the December 4 release and landed at #2 on the Top 300 Graphic Novels chart for December (see "Top 300 Graphic Novels Actual--December 2013").
Yes, Jake and Finn are the stars of the show, so maybe McDonalds’ did need to make two of each figure, but Princess Bubblegum and Marceline are at least as popular as the Ice King and BMO (whose gender depends on the scenario it is running at any given time). This will probably not be the last McDonalds hears of this, perhaps until there’s a Series 2 with Lady Rainicorn and Lumpy Space Princess.
