Batman and Superman are about conquer the box office this weekend, a feat that they may not accomplish again until the Batman/Superman live-action movie opens more than two years from now in May of 2016.   The bad news for Warner Bros. is that this weekend’s Batman and Superman are just little LEGO figures, but the good news for the studio is that Warners is releasing The LEGO Movie and it’s quite likely to be #1 film of the month, and even has a chance to post the best February opening ever.

The LEGO Movie is a the latest work from the team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who are the driving force behind Brooklyn Nine Nine, the cult hit cartoon series Clone High, and the movie comedy adaptation of 21 Jump Street.  Amazingly The LEGO Movie has a stratospheric Tomatometer reading of 99% positive with only one negative review out of 80 collected by review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

As if good reviews and a major TV ad campaign aren’t enough Fandango is reporting that The LEGO Movie presells are tracking higher than any previous animated feature with the sole exception of Toy Story 3, better than Despicable Me 2, which opened with $83 million, better than Monsters University which debuted with $82, and better than Frozen, which bowed with $67.6 million in direct competition with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (which it has since passed in global box office total).

So the all-time February record of $83.8 million currently held by Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ could be in some jeopardy as could the all-time debut for a non-sequel animated feature, which is held by The Simpsons Movie ($74 million).
