ICv2 has placed dollar estimates on the size of the North American retail market for graphic novels. It estimates the market size as $100 million in 2002, evenly divided between comic stores and bookstores, 33% higher than it was in 2001. A 20% growth rate is expected in 2003, higher in bookstores than comic stores. The estimate is in the lead article (titled 'Graphic Novels -- How Big, How Fast Is It Growing, Who's Buying') in the new ICv2 Retailers Guide to Graphic Novels, currently shipping to retailers (see 'ICv2 Releases Retailers Guide to Graphic Novels'). The article also includes a discussion of the factors driving growth, the demographics of consumers buying graphic novels (with surprising, large differences by channel), and other market characteristics.
