New York Comic Con News: At the Diamond Retailer Breakfast at the NYCC, which Hannah Means-Shannon is live blogging, Bob Wayne, in his last retailer presentation, provided the first close-up look at the poly-bagged Harley Quinn "Rub-And-Smell" Annual, which comes with what is likely a first for a mainstream comic, a Cannabis leaf-enhanced cover warning, "This issue contains scents designed to offend, inform, and amuse," quite possibly indicating that the skunky smell of marijuana is among the scents available in the issue. Why the "Rub-And-Smell" rather than the more alliterative "Scratch-and-Sniff"? Perhaps the latter is trademarked.
DC’s Harley Quinn comic is currently riding high (Harley Quinn Future’s End #1 was the #4 comic in Sept. see "Top 300 Comics--September") thanks in part to the character’s sheer exuberant craziness--on the annual cover she is using a slingshot to propel a hand grenade. Chances are the content of the issue won’t be quite as outre as the cover suggests, but there is no doubt that DC is pushing the boundaries with the latest compilation of the off-the-wall adventures of its cute cutting-edge cut-up.
Will odors become the new frontier for physical comic books--after all, you can’t scratch-and-sniff an ebook reader, can you?
