Tokyopop, the powerhouse manga publisher, is teaming with LA-based Jada Toys, Inc. to create a line of licensed die cast cars and action figures based on the Initial D property.  Tokyopop, which has published 7 volumes of the 23-volume Initial D manga series, has just released its first Initial D anime DVD and is supporting the launch with a major publicity campaign (see 'Tokyopop Plans A Major Push For Initial D').  In addition to the anime release, AEG is releasing an Initial D CCG in October (see 'Details On The Initial D CCG').  The first Initial D diecasts from Jada Toys are due in early 2004.

The key to making a success out of cars based on the Initial D property will be an understanding of what makes a great street racing machine.  'Tuner' cars, as they are called, are heavily modified street machines, turbo-charged Japanese equivalents of 1970s U.S. muscle cars.  Jada Toys has procured an actual Eight-Six Toyota Trueno, the same car driven by Tak, the hero of Initial D.  Jada Toys plans on exhibiting this legendary street racing machine at auto events across the country.

One interesting side note included in the press release announcing the licensing of Jada Toys is the fact that Tokyopop is also licensing Jada Toys to produce action figures based on the main characters from the Initial D saga.  No details about the action figures or when the first ones will be released were included in the press release, but if Initial D takes off, action figures should be available by this time next year.
