Variety is reporting that Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise will team up again on a new version of H.G. Wells' seminal science fiction classic, The War of the Worlds.  First published in 1898, the book became a nationwide sensation when Orson Welles caused widespread panic with a 'documentary style' radio production in 1938, which had many believing that the Martians had actually landed.  In 1953 Byron Haskin directed a solid movie version of Wells' classic story that has secured a reputation as a 1950s science fiction classic.  Spielberg and Cruise are now waiting for a final screenplay by David Knoepp (Spider-Man, Jurassic Park).  With plans for a fourth Indiana Jones film stalled (see 'Indiana Jones and the Script of Doom'), Spielberg could be looking to start filming a new version of War of the Worlds starring Tom Cruise sometime in 2005.
