Not all comic book-based films are moneymakers. Variety is reporting that the Australia-based Village Roadshow Ltd. has announced that lower-than-expected box office earnings from Catwoman, which it co-produced with Warner Bros., will substantially reduce its film profits for the current fiscal year. Catwoman, which was directed by the French special effects whiz Pitof and which starred Halle Berry, has earned some $40 million at the domestic box office and an additional $28.5 million outside the U.S., but the film's cost was $100 million and the studios spent an additional $35 million in advertising. While DVDs should help Catwoman recover some of its losses, that won't help Village Roadshow in the near term. In fact, according to Variety, 'VRL estimated its upcoming releases in the next 12 months, including Ocean's 12, Miss Congeniality -- Armed & Fabulous, Constantine, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory would not be sufficient to cover Catwoman's losses.'
