The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Nick Cassavetes is in negotiations to direct Marvel's Iron Man film, due out in 2006.  Cassavetes had a weeper hit this summer -- The Notebook.  To explain why a director with that kind of pedigree was right for a superhero movie, Marvel's Avi Arad pointed out to The Hollywood Reporter that Bryan Singer (X-Men) and Sam Raimi (Spider-Man) had both directed character-based film prior to their work on Marvel superhero movies.  'It all starts with the emotional mix,' Arad said.

Cassavetes will also take another whack at the script, which has been written by David Hayter over an initial draft by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (see 'Iron Man Gets a New Writer').
