Green Ronin Publishing has announced a Second Edition of its superhero role-playing game, Mutants & Masterminds, which will ship to the hobby and book trade in September of this year. The First Edition of Mutants & Masterminds, which was one of the first RPGs published under the Open Game License, came out in 2002, sold through several printings and spawned a supporting line of supplements.
The Second Edition of Mutants & Masterminds will be a 256-page full color hardback with a new cover by Ramon Perez and a suggested retail price of $39.95. It will contain more than a dozen ready-made superhero archetypes, supervillain archetypes, and two introductory adventures.
Most of the changes in the new edition of Mutants & Masterminds are based on suggestions from fans of the game. For the most part First Edition books and supplements can be used with the new Second Edition -- character stats are compatible though certain feats and powers work slightly differently.
Green Ronin also plans to update its primary Mutants & Masterminds campaign setting, Freedom City, with a Freedom City Second Edition, which will also be a 256-page, full color hardback. It will include material from Foes of Freedom and the Mutants & Masterminds Annual #1 plus additional all new elements. Freedom City Second Edition is slated to ship in November.
In the first quarter of 2006 Green Ronin will complete the M&M trifecta by publishing the Mastermind's Manual, a Gamemaster's toolkit for M&M, which includes advice on running the game, creating adventures, and handling powers plus a huge selection of optional and variant rules, which can be used to customize the M&M system. The Mastermind's Manual will be a 160-page full color hardcover.
