The National Lampoon, Inc. has announced plans to recraft the Gumby TV series for a new generation.  In the 'edgy, irreverent' reinvention, called Gumby: The Lost Tapes, assorted wags at the National Lampoon will create and produce all-new dialog (and in some cases music) tracks for the classic Claymation series.  The 'new' versions of the classic series will appear on the National Lampoon Network, the largest in-dorm television network, reaching nearly 5 million college students on 600 campuses nationwide.  National Lampoon will also be issuing the 'new' episodes for sale on DVD.

'Creative' redubbing in the mode of Silents, Please and What's Up Tiger Lily appears to be undergoing something of a renaissance at the present time.  ADV recently announced an improvised wholesale 're-crafting' of the Ghost Stories anime (see 'ADV Rewrites Anime'), but it remains to be seen if the phenomenon will become a trend or just a series of one-offs.  National Lampoon appears to be hedging its bets -- it has acquired the rights to air the 'original' Gumby episodes -- with the original audio tracks intact -- and will begin doing so as part of its fall programming season.
