The Sixth Annual Free Comic Book Day, which will be held at comic shops at on Saturday, May 5th, will feature an unprecedented array of 44 free comic book titles (there were 28 titles available in 2006--note: not every title will be available at every location). Publishers are making a wide variety of comic books available including lots of titles for young readers featuring characters like Little Archie, The Simpsons, Mickey Mouse, Sonic the Hedgehog, Gumby, Owly, and Peanuts, to name a few.
Some publishers are using the free comics associated with the event to launch a new property, such as Image's Astounding Wolf-Man written by horror comics maven Robert Kirkman (Walking Dead, Marvel Zombies). Others like Marvel with its Amazing Spider-Man Swing Shift, are supporting potent established properties (the Spider-Man 3 movies opens on May 4th). And comic books aren't the only attraction of Free Comic Book Day; WizKids is providing a free Batman HeroClix figure to some participating stores.
Publishers can help sponsor FCBD events at two different levels: Gold Sponsored titles are available at all participating comic shops, while the availability of titles from Silver-level sponsors will vary among participating stores. Archie Comics, DC Comics, and Marvel Comics are all participating at both the Gold and Silver levels.
