Back in July of 2009 Guinness World Records certified that Konami’s Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game was the bestselling trading card game of all time with over 22 billion cards sold.  With that total now having climbed to 25,175,567,833 cards sold since 1999, Konami has received an updated certification from the folks at Guinness affirming that it continues to be the bestselling trading card game of all time. 

 

Dana Sera, Walmart’s Category Advisor for Trading Cards noted the debt that all trading cards owe to the trailblazing YGO TCG: “Yu-Gi-Oh! forever changed the modern trading card industry. It alone built the foundation for trading cards for the retail class of trade.  Every single trading card brand, from gaming through sports, owes a debt of gratitude for the inroads that Yu-Gi-Oh! paved into retail.”

 

ICv2’s Milton Griepp noted: “The Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG has been at or near the top of ICv2’s “Top Game Properties” charts since we started doing them in 2003.  The new milestone of 25 billion cards is just another measure of the enduring popularity of this powerful transmedia property.”
