Sands of Time Games has expanded its offerings for the Catacombs board game to include two new expansions. The first print run of the base game sold through and a second printing is now available.
Catacombs: Cavern of Soloth adds over 40 new wooden pieces, four new heroes with unique special abilities, four new Catacomb Lords, new shot types, sixty new cards containing new monsters, items, new rooms and special room cards, with special “1000 gold” currency cards. The expansion retails for around $35.99
Catacombs: Dark Passageways is a card-based mini-expansion for the original Catacombs game. It introduces new "exploration" room cards, which add effects to the base game while the heroes are exploring the Catacomb. It releases 2011 and retails for around $9.99.
Both expansions require the original Catacombs game to play.
Catacombs relies on manual dexterity to flip play pieces into a room, or catacomb, on a game board in order to vanquish the foes and monsters that lurk within. The game is an asymmetrical cooperative game, meaning that one player must take the role of the “Overseer” and the other four players take the role of the heroes.
The main mechanic of Catacombs is for the players to flick wooden discs representing the heroes and the monsters. Contact with an opposing piece inflicts damage, with other ways to cause other effects. Heroes can move further into the catacomb when all of the monsters of a room have been cleared. Heroes can win by defeating the Catacomb Lord. The Overseer can win by defeating all the players.
The base game is for two to five players ages 12 and up, and plays in 30 to 60 minutes. Included are three double-sided game boards, 12 Wizard Spell cards, 13 Monster cards, 9 Item cards, 38 Room cards, 68 wooden discs and cubes, 40 currency cards, 8 Player Mats, and the game manual. It retails for around $55.
