Here’s a third trailer for Universal’s Battleship, which debuts in the U.S. on May 18th.  Peter Berg’s film is based on Hasbro’s classic board game and stars Taylor Kitsch, who just headlined Disney’s box office disappointment John Carter (see “John Carter’s Dismal Debut Makes It Number Two”).  Like John Carter, Battleship is a pricy blockbuster with a budget well north of $200 million that could pose a danger to the studio’s bottom line if audiences don’t cotton to its alien invasion plot, which is only tied tenuously to the Hasbro game (see “Universal Bets the Farm on Battleship”).

Like John Carter, Battleship’s major chance for box office success probably lies overseas where audiences haven’t lost their taste for Hollywood’s apolcalyptic blockbusters, but unlike Disney Universal is opening Battleship overseas a week earlier on May 11th, hoping that the movie will already look like a box office winner by the time it opens here in the U.S.
