Monte Cooke Games has announced the trade release for its new sci-fi RPG The Strange, which will include the release of the corebook and Player’s Guide in August. MCG also plans extensive retail support for the game launch.
The game was financed last year with an extremely successful Kickstarter campaign which was funded in less than 24 hours (see "'The Strange' RPG"), and went on to raise $418,478 from 2,883 backers ($145.15 average/backer). MCG shared preliminary details with ICv2 at that time, and this announcement of trade release was meant to coincide with game creator Bruce R. Cordell’s birthday. The game is designed by Cordell and Monte Cook, and will run on the Cypher System game engine, which also powers Numenera.
The 416-page The Strange corebook will be a hardcover book that includes a double-sided poster map. MSRP will be $59.99.
The Strange: Player’s Guide will be a 96-page softcover, and is designed as an inexpensive, shorter version of the corebook, for use as a teaching tool or as an aid for generating characters. MSRP will be $19.99.
MTG plans to release a 96-page softcover adventure book, The Dark Spiral, in September. MSRP will be $24.99. MTG also plans to release short fiction and a conversion guide for their Origins Award-Nominated RPG Numenera (see "'Numenera Character Options'") in e-book format as well. For retailer support, MTG plans a hassle-free retail pre-order program, PoP kits, retailer-exclusive sneak peeks, as well as a demo team.
The Strange is a dimension-hopping sci-fi game, set in modern-day Earth. A network of dark energy, called "The Strange" has been discovered, which gives users access to a multitude of parallel worlds. These world have their own natural laws and are filled with danger, including foes who now have access back to Earth itself.
