An interesting variety of new releases adds some interest to the chart of the Top 20 best-selling Adult graphic novels according to Circana (formerly NPD) BookScan data for May 2025 (5/4/25 – 5/31/25) provided to ICv2.
A new volume of Jujutsu Kaisen tops the list, followed by new volumes of Chainsaw Man and Solo Leveling.
Then the chart starts to get interesting. The eighth volume of Lore Olympus takes up two slots, with the hardcover placing at number 4 and the paperback at number 18. The hardcover edition of Vol. 7 made the Adult Top 20 both months, but the paperback did not (see "October 2024 Circana BookScan"); this may be because it was released on October 1 so initial sales were split across two reporting periods.
At number 5 is Vol. 1 of Part 7 of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, a series that has not placed in the Adult Top 20 since August 2021 (see "August 2021 NPD BookScan"), although it has popped up on the Manga charts a few times since then. VIZ Media is publishing this series in deluxe hardcover volumes priced at $25, as opposed to $11.99 for their standard paperbacks, but enthusiasm is high for the new arc.
Vol. 3 of Kagurabachi is up next; the first volume has been nominated for a 2025 Eisner Award, and the series is selling well in Japan (see "Top 20 Manga Volumes in Japan"). An anime is in the works, but apparently fans aren't waiting: Every volume has made the Top 20 the month it comes out.
In 11th place is Vol. 12 of Saga, the first new volume since November 2023. It's been even longer since this series, once a behemoth, made the Top 20, so this is a strong showing.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is a fantasy series that picked up steam after the anime started airing on Netflix in March 2025 (see "ICv2 Interview: VIZ Media Director, Publishing Sales Sarah Anderson"). The first volume to appear in the Top 20 was Vol. 12, in February, and now Vol. 13 is on the May chart in 12th place. This is one of the series that Circana's Kristen McLean named as among the fastest-growing manga back in February (see "ComicsPRO: Fastest-Growing Series and Other Trends").
And finally, Alison Bechdel's new graphic novel, Spent, debuts at number 14. That's quite a run of new or almost-new graphic novels, and after last month's ho-hum lineup (see "April 2025 Circana BookScan"), it's a welcome change.
