Summer showbiz news is sizzling hot, and it's time for a round-up!
Paramount+ announced that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for its fifth and final season. This final season will consist of six new episodes, and production for this season will begin later in 2025. The announcement of the end of the series comes ahead of the launch of the show's Season 3, which hits streaming on July 17, 2025 (see "’Star Trek’ Trailers").
Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios have greenlit a Mister Miracle animated series. Tom King, who wrote multiple limited runs of the Mister Miracle comics, has been tapped to be the showrunner and an executive producer. The series will be based on King and Mitch Gerads' acclaimed 12-issue Eisner-acclaimed miniseries that ran from 2017 to 2018 (see "‘Mister Miracle’ Collected").
DC Studios also released another Superman trailer (see below). This highly-anticipated James Gunn feature film will hit theaters on July 11, 2025 (see "'Superman'").
Prime Video will expand the Steven Universe universe with an all-new sequel series, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The new series will revolve around Lars Barriga and be entitled Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars. Rebecca Sugar, the creator of Steven Universe (see "Rebecca Sugar"), will executive produce the show.
Disney and NBC/Universal have filed a federal lawsuit against generative AI start-up Midjourney, according to Variety. The lawsuit alleges that Midjourney's website "displays hundreds, if not thousands, of images generated by its Image Service at the request of its subscribers that infringe Plaintiffs' Copyrighted Works." In Rob Salkowitz's 2022 interview with David Holtz, CEO of Midjourney, Holtz actually admitted to not seeking consent from artists when using images to train their AI model.
Lucasfilm has added Mia Goth to the cast of Star Wars: Starfighter, according The Hollywood Reporter. Goth will join Ryan Gosling on this film project, which will be directed by Shawn Levy (see "Starfighter").
