Topps' Wacky Packages trading cards are getting considerable regional traction in the New York metro area, with both independent retailers and chain stores reporting strong sales.  Sales per store for one mass market retail chain are over ten times the national average in the New York metro area.  And independent retailers, reporting 'Pokemon-level' sales, are putting hand-made signs in their windows to let passersby know they've got the hot commodity.

Reacting to the market response, Topps has thrown additional marketing support behind the brand in the New York metro area, including television advertising and extensive sampling via street teams.

Topps execs are mystified by the difference in response between New York and the rest of the country, but are hoping that the local heat ignites sales in the rest of the country.  A second series of Wacky Packages is planned for release early this year.
