Robert Carlyle will star in Stargate:  Universe, the new series from Sci Fi Channel (see “Stargate:  Universe in 2009”), according to Hollywood Reporter.   His character will lead a group left to fend for itself after being forced through a Stargate when their hidden base comes under attack.

According to the Reporter, the new series will be “edgier, darker, and younger-skewing” than the other Stargate series.  Shooting will start in February; the new series will kick off next summer with a two-hour premiere episode.  Sci Fi Channel is expected to place an initial 20-episode order.

Carlyle starred in The Full Monty, Trainspotting, and 28 Weeks Later.
