The dashing masked swordsman known as Zorro is getting a post-apocalyptic reboot for a new film project titled Zorro Reborn, THR is reporting.

The futuristic take on the pulp hero will retain the basic theme of the myth: a masked hero who defends the weak against corrupt and brutal tyrants.   has been in various stages of development for over 15 years, having previously  been set up at 20th Century Fox with Bryan Singer among others attached over the years.

The film will be produced as a partnership between Lantica Media and Sobina Films, with Lantica financing, with plans to begin principal photography in March 2016.  Sobini CEO Mark Amin, whose credits include Good Kill and Frida, will produce.  The project is currently seeking a director.

Zorro is an enduring comic property.  Dynamite Entertainment has been producing licensed  Zorro comics since 2007, which it has used in everything from a Django/Zorro crossover (see “'Django/Zorro' Debuts in November”)  to an appearance in its popular Legenderry: A Steampunk Adventure (see “ Preview: 'Legenderry: A Steampunk Adventure' TP”).

Hermes Press has released Alex Toth's Zorro: The Complete Dell Comics Adventures, as well as more recently the Zorro: The Complete Dell Pre-Code Comics collection. Papercutz also produced a manga-style Zorro graphic novel series in 2005 (see “Zorro Graphic Novel Planned for August”).
