French game publisher Capsicum Games is entering the field of space combat games with its fleet-based tactical game Fleet Commander: Genesis, supported by two expansion sets, scheduled to release in November.
Set in a future where humanity has spread across the stars, Fleet Commander: Genesis imagines a conflict between the merchant houses of the League of Phoebe and the militaristic Hegemony of Amycles for control of space. Fleets of warships clash in battle on a geomorphic gameboard representing a variety of deep space hazards. Much of the game is controlled through the use of dice pools, which determine the ability of ships to move from zone to zone, attack, and defend.
Fleet Commander: Genesis will include 50 double-sided board tiles, 32 plastic ship models on reversible bases, 58 tokens, 36 custom dice, and 24 command bridge tiles, allowing for battles with up to two dozen ships. The game is designed for 2 to 4 players, ages 12 and up, and plays in about an hour. MSRP is $109.00. Genesis will include rules in both English and French inside the box.The release of Fleet Commander: Genesis will be supported by two expansion sets:
Fleet Commander: Salvation will include 4 new ship models, 4 new board tiles, 16 tokens, 8 command bridge tiles, and rules for fighting campaigns of linked battles.
Fleet Commander: Avatar will include 2 new larger ship models, 4 new board tiles, 6 tokens, 4 command bridge tiles, and new mechanics for special commanders.
MSRP for both expansion sets is $26.00.
Capsicum Games will be funding the project through Kickstarter, and their campaign reached its funding goal less than five hours after it was launched. Capsicum Games told ICv2 that its North American distribution plans have not been finalized at this point, but that the company is making a special offer to retailers who contact them during their Kickstarter campaign.
Capsicum Games was launched in 2014. Fleet Commander: Genesis will be its fourth game, and the second version of its flagship Fleet Commander title.
