Executive producers for the new DreamWorks Animation Voltron series for Netflix have revealed that they considered a “bro’d out” version with a military vibe and chainsaws, but in the end decided on a Game of Thrones feel with some humor and a higher danger level, according to a report in USA Today.  “There are some of these encounters they just manage to survive,” according to executive producer Joaquim Dos Santos.

The new series, Voltron:  Legendary Defender (see “Netflix ‘Voltron’ Series Gets Name”) will feature characters with richer backstories than in the original series, and with “a real purpose for being on this mission and getting involved with Voltron in the first place,” Dos Santos said in the report.  The characters will engage opponents both as the lions and as humans, depending on the situation.

The new series will be the first new Voltron material since Voltron Force, which lasted one season on Nicktoons in 2011.
