Comic-Con International will be spending a few more years in San Diego.
Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced during a press conference Friday that Comic-Con and the city had negotiated an agreement to keep the convention in San Diego through 2021.
"I can’t say enough how proud I am of how Comic-Con has grown with San Diego," said Faulconer, "and all of us here want it to grow even more."
Faulconer then called for an expansion of the San Diego Convention Center, which has been a point of contention for organizers and many in the community. The sentiment was echoed by other speakers, including Comic-Con’s David Glanzer, who noted that "there are continuing concerns" about the limited space in the convention center.
In a February interview with ICv2, Glanzer explained that the hotels were no small factor in the negotiations, with many hotels wanting to limit the size of room blocks, enabling them to charge higher rates for the remaining rooms once those blocks filled (see "Comic-Con's David Glanzer on Con Growth, Fan Dollars, and SDCC's Future in San Diego").
Faulconer specifically mentioned the hotels in the press conference, thanking them for keeping rates reasonable for Comic-Con attendees.
