At Gen Con, Monte Cook Games announced the next evolution for its award-winning science fantasy role playing game Numenera. Numenera 2: Discovery and Destiny will expand and update Numenera while still being compatible with existing material.

Numenera 2 is actually a set of core rulebooks: Numenera Discovery, which is a revision of the original rulebook, and Numenera Destiny, which gives players the tools to become part of the setting, and shape their world’s future based on past adventures.  Numenera 2 will be Kickstarted in September, with trade release planned for Summer 2018. Current estimated retail price will be $120.00 for a slipcase edition, or $60.00 each.

Numenera Discovery will take the place of the core rulebook, which Monte Cook will let go out of print. While certain sections contain revisions to make things clearer and increase options available, it is not a new edition. The mechanics and interaction NPCs and items will not change. Bestiaries, adventures, card decks, character portfolios, and other books will not be affected. If players choose not to purchase this new core book, all future supplements will be compatible.

Numenera Destiny is a core size book that presents a crafting system that helps players become part of the setting, and shape the future of the Ninth World. Players can now use things they find to improve life going forward. It also allows players to shepherd and manage communities long term, encouraging trade, building, innovation and protection. There are three new character types, and new descriptors and foci to help encourage this new style of play.
