“Godtear is a miniatures-based board game,” Hart said. “By that, I mean it has all the accessibility and really simple, fast, fluid rule set that you would expect from a board game, but it has the depth and the complexity that you'd expect from a high-quality miniatures game. It's going to come in pre-assembled PVC, very similar to what we do with our Guild Ball releases.”
The game is set in a classic fantasy world, where the gods have been forgotten and died. “When they died, their essence just shattered, and fell to the ground in this cataclysmic rain of god tears,” Hart said. Now various mortal champions are collecting the tear-shaped crystals of god essence. “When they collect them, they can absorb them. They become bigger, stronger, and more powerful, which is why when you see the champions in the case over there, the champions themselves are at a much larger scale than their followers. They are becoming godlike.”The game is played on a single table, Hart explained, not an extended war game table. The game plays in 45 – 60 minutes. None of the usual miniatures game ephemera (tape measures, timers) are required.
Steamforged plans to Kickstarter the game this spring. Fulfillment is tentatively set for early spring 2019. Steamforged hopes to launch the retail version of the game in April, “around the Delta Con time next year,” Hart said. Hart also scared that while there will be a goal on the Kickstarter to unlock Godtear Starter Set II, it will be a retail-only release, not actually sold to backers. Future champion and followers sets will have an MSRP of $20 -$30.
The early release kit, available for purchase on the company’s website, contains Blackjaw, The Exile, Rhodri Ironheart, Thane of the Forsaken Hold, Lorsaynne, The Autumnal Wind, Raeth-Marid, The Unbroken Tide, x5 Orcs, x4 Dwarves, x3 Elves, x3 Water Spirits, Laminate dry-wipe Playmat, 24 Blank Dice, 12 mdf tokens, 1 tri-hex, 12 mdf hexes, 70 health cubes, 3 sticker sheets. Character cards and rules are currently downloadable, but will be included in the final release.
