The giant monster battle game Monsterpocalypse is being relaunched by Privateer Press in a new format. The Monsterpocalypse Hobby Miniatures Game will release this fall.
Monsterpocalypse first appeared in 2008 as a collectible miniatures game, with blind-buy pre-painted plastic miniatures. Now Privateer is developing a more traditional model for the game, intended to appeal to the same kind of hobby miniatures enthusiasts as Privateer’s other established lines.
Like the original game, players will control one or more giant monsters or giant robots, duking it out in dense and destructible urban environments. Each monster is supported by a band of smaller combatants, such as tanks, airplanes, UFOs, or demonic creatures. The smaller units can capture and hold locations, but in the end only the last monster standing can claim victory.
The new version will feature streamlined rules for faster play. The miniatures, both monsters and support units, will now be unpainted and assembly-required resin and metal models, similar to Privateer’s Warmachine and Hordes models. No longer packaged in blind-buy boxes, players will be able to construct the teams they choose.
Privateer’s Press Executive Director William Shick described the philosophy behind the relaunch. "After its long hiatus, we are absolutely thrilled to finally be able to bring back the game, bigger and better than before. The change from pre-painted figures to full-fledged hobby miniatures game gives us the opportunity to realize the towering monsters, cool units, and dense urban arena these forces do battle in with the same detail and quality our Warmachine and Hordes miniatures are known for. And while the game will feel familiar to any veteran players, we’ve streamlined and simplified gameplay to make it faster as well as easier for new players to pick up."
The initial release will include two one-player starter sets, which include a monster and some support units plus the game components needed to play. Supporting products will include monster packs, unit blisters, and building packs with resin buildings.
Intended for two players, games will take about 45 minutes to play.
