We’re moving into high manga/anime season with last week’s Anime Central in Chicago, and Anime Expo coming up in July. Here’s a quick look at some of the announcements so far.

Vertical Hits the Road: Vertical Comics has licensed Kino’s Journey, a manga adaptation of the light novel series (which has also spawned several anime and games). Tokyopop released the first volume of the novels back in the 2000s, but they never followed up with volume 2. The story of Kino and his talking motorcycle has been a popular one, and the manga, which launched last year in Japan, is ongoing. Vertical plans to publish the first volume of the manga in summer 2019.

A talking car stars in Vertical’s other new manga license, Go with the Clouds, North by Northwest, by Aki Irie. This series features a 17-year-old detective with a weak spot for the ladies who is traveling around Iceland looking for someone. Irie is also the creator of Ran and the New World, which Viz has licensed for a fall release. Go with the Clouds is scheduled for a May 2019 launch.

One more for Vertical: Sherlock Holmes travels to Japan in Sherlock Holmes and Hirobumi Ito, a novel that pairs the famous detective with the first prime minister of Japan in order to solve an international mystery.

The Inn Crowd: Viz announced a new shoujo (girls) manga acquisition at its Anime Central panel last weekend: Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits is a story about Aoi, a girl who can see spirits—and, thanks to her grandfather, owes them big: He trashed an inn, and Aoi has to pay off his debt. The spirits whisk her off to their world and give her an unpalatable choice: Marry the innkeeper or be eaten alive by his spirit employees. Aoi, being a shoujo heroine, rejects both options and decides to work of his debt by cooking at the inn. This romantic comedy is based on a series of light novels and has also been made into an anime, which is available on Crunchyroll.

Anime News Network also reports that Viz announced it would publish volume 13 of Loveless in June. It’s been a long wait—volume 12 came out in 2014—but Viz is also making it easier to catch up by releasing the entire series in digital.

Seven Seas Adds Two Light Novels: Seven Seas has licensed two light novel spinoffs of one of their most popular titles, The Ancient Magus’ Bride. The Ancient Magus’s Bride: The Golden Yarn will be released on December 11 with an MSRP of $13.99, and The Ancient Magus’ Bride: Silver Yarn is due out on March 19, 2019, also with an MSRP of $13.99.

Convention News: With the summer convention season approaching, announcements are starting to roll in. The digital service BookWalker is kicking things off with the news that Kugane Maruyama, the author of Overlord, and Kumo Kagyu, the author of Goblin Slayer, will be at Anime Expo, along with Naoyuki Ito, the director of the Overlord manga. Overlord is a light novel and manga series about a player who remains in an MMPORPG game after it shuts down and finds himself the ruler of the whole world; Goblin Slayer is also a light novel and manga series, and it’s a fantasy tale about an adventurer who just likes killing goblins. A Goblin Slayer anime is in the works.
