AMC and Next Games will release an augmented reality mobile game that immerses users in the world of AMC’s The Walking Dead.

Much like Pokemon Go, the game uses a player’s GPS location overlaid with characters and encounters in real time.  Players can explore the world, find walkers, clear their surroundings, and leave an identifier on the digital map alerting other players to their presence.  Players can collect characters, weapons, and items from the show, as well as cooperate with other players in weekly challenges.

The game launches on Google Play and the Apple App Store on July 12, just over two years after Pokemon Go’s extended launch (see "'Pokemon Go' Blows Up at Launch").  Here’s hoping the players respond to the source material as well as Pokemon Go players did after launch (see "38% of 'Pokemon Go' Players Are Likely to Purchase a Pokemon Product").  The Walking Dead #181 releases in comic stores on July 4.  Image Comics and Skybound Entertainment will be hosting Walking Dead Day in comic shops on October 13 (see "Collectible Blind Bag Issues for 'The Walking Dead' Day").
