Writer and executive producer Jon Favreau (Iron Man) has shared details about his live-action Star Wars series, including the name of the show: The Mandalorian.  According to an Instagram post, the series will take after the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, following a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy. As revealed previously, the show will be set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order (see “The Renewed, The Cancelled, The Rebooted: 'Gotham,' 'Lost in Space,' 'iZombie,' 'The Expanse,' 'Charmed,' 'Star Wars,' and More”), although the timeline has been corrected to indicate it takes place three years after the events of Return of the Jedi (it is set seven years after the Battle of Yavin, which was in A New Hope).

Based on Star Wars lore, Mandalore was a system populated by a warrior class that historically conflicted with the Jedi Order and the Old Republic. Mandalorians figured prominently in the Clone Wars. At the time, the Mandalorian government was led by a pacifist political faction, causing internal strife. Eventually, the system came under the rule of the Empire. While not born Mandalorian, both Jango and Boba Fett wore Mandalorian armor.

Favreau didn’t reveal which Mandalorian will form the nexus of his series. The character of Boba Fett is already earmarked for a feature film from Logan director James Mangold (see “'Star Wars' Boba Fett Movie Lands 'Logan' Director”), so it’s unlikely -- but not impossible given the character’s enduring popularity -- that the show will center on Fett. Favreau himself voiced a Mandalorian, Pre Vizsla, in The Clone Wars, but that character was killed by Darth Maul. Several responses to Favreau’s Instagram post have guessed Sabine Wren, a Mandalorian rebel who bore the darksaber, but it’s all conjecture at this point.

Whomever ends up being the focus of the show, The Mandalorian is set to air in 2019 on Disney’s yet-to-be-named over-the-top digital streaming service.
