Dark Horse Comics gave their upcoming Minecraft graphic novel, due for release Summer 2019 (see "’Minecraft’ Gets Publishing Program"), a big push with its participation in a one-day activation at all U.S. Target stores on September 22. In conjunction with the event, 560,000 copies of a Minecraft ashcan comic created by Dark Horse were given away. The event also included a scavenger hunt, early access to the minigame Grid Runners, appearances by Minecraft creators at select stores, and the unveiling of 80 Target-exclusive Minecraft products as part of a larger range now in stock at the stores.
Minecraft, purchased by Microsoft in 2014, is stronger than ever, with over 154 million copies sold and over 91 million monthly players worldwide, according to Business Insider.
