Award-winning graphic novelist Craig Thompson is developing a periodical comic series for the first time; Uncivilized Books will launch Ginseng Roots, a new bi-monthly series, in July 2019. Drawing on Thompson's experience working in ginseng fields in Wisconsin with his brother while he was growing up, the new comic combines a memoir with an essay on the ginseng trade. The ginseng funded Thompson’s interest in comics and allowed him to escape his past.
Thompson's award-winning Blankets is currently in print from Drawn & Quarterly (see "D&Q Acquires Rights for ‘Blankets’").
Ginseng Roots is one of two new titles Uncivilized is launching as the first titles in its new periodical line. The other is My Dog Ivy by Gabrielle Bell, which tells the story of house-sitting in a Minnesota home with two cats and a neurotic golden retriever. It launches in March 2019.
