Within a day of release, artist Joe Bennett has apologized for an anti-Semitic reference in Immortal Hulk #43, and Marvel has told retailers that "corrected" versions of both the main and variant editions are being printed and are available for exchange for the original versions. "Marvel is correcting and reprinting the main and variant editions of Immortal Hulk #43, originally on sale 2/3," Marvel said in its notice to retailers last Thursday. "Requests to return for exchange on Immortal Hulk #43 with these corrected versions may be made starting today."
The page in question featured a scene in the inside of a jewelry store with lettering on the glass window to the street. The lettering, which was reversed because it was being viewed from the inside, has most of the name "Cronemberg" visible, and a word (with some letters obscured by characters in the foreground) that appears to say "Jewery," along with a Star of David. The characters in the foreground are haggling over a piece of jewelry.
In his apology on Facebook, Bennett said that he had been attempting to draw "Cronenberg’s Jewelry," in a nod to director David Cronenberg, but mis-spelled both words. The Star of David was another matter. "I have no excuse for how I depicted the Star of David, Bennet wrote. "I failed to understand this troubling and offensive stereotype, and after listening to you all, I now understand my mistake. This was wrong, offensive, and hurtful in many ways. This is a mistake I must own, and I am sorry to everyone who I hurt by this."
Both Marvel and Bennett took action last Thursday, February 4, one day after the issue was released.
