Dark Horse Comics will bring a set of classic sword-and-sorcery comics back into print with the Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser Omnibus, which combines two previously published collections, Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, by Howard Chaykin and Mike Mignola, and Fafhrd and the Gary Mouser: The Cloud of Hate and Other Stories, by Denny O’Neil, Howard Chaykin, and Walter Simonson. The 320-page paperback will be available in bookstores on June 27, 2023, and in comic shops on June 28, and will have an MSRP of $29.99.

Writer Fritz Lieber created the characters of Fafhrd, a skilled swordsman who stood nearly seven feet tall, and his companion the Gray Mouser, who was much smaller, also handy with a sword, and also had some magic skills. The first of their stories was published in 1939, and the final one appeared in 1988.

The characters made their comic book debut in 1972 from DC Comics in Wonder Woman #202, and then they got their own five-issue series, Sword of Sorcery, in 1973. This comic was written by O’Neil with art by Chaykin, Simonson, and Starlin, and was collected by Dark Horse as Fafhrd and the Gary Mouser: The Cloud of Hate and Other Stories in 2008. The series simply titled Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, written by Chaykin and penciled by Mignola, was published by Epic Comics in 1991 as a four-issue miniseries; Dark Horse published a collected edition in 2007 (see “Out of the Past”).
