Once again Dreamworks has forsaken the normal Tuesday DVD release so that its Shrek 2 DVD can go head-to-head with the theatrical opening of Disney/Pixar's The Incredibles on Friday, November 5.  The original Shrek won the 'stores vs. theaters' battle the first time around by grossing $110 million for DVDs and VHS tapes in contrast to the $62.5 million opening weekend box officefor the Disney/Pixar Monsters Inc. (see 'Stores Beat Box Office').  The overall 'winner' in that combat is harder to pick since Monsters Inc.'s box office total nearly matched that of Shrek.

Before anyone rushes to condemn Dreamworks for continuing the feud, it should be noted that Dreamworks had originally scheduled its Shark Tale feature for a November 5 debut, but had to move it up when Disney decided to muscle in on the date with The Incredibles (see 'Disney Drills Dreamworks With Pixar Pic').

The extras-filled Shrek 2 DVD (SRP $29.99) has a lot going for it -- Shrek 2 is the third highest grossing film in history with a mammoth domestic box office total of $439 million -- and the DVD includes an all new surprise ending, plus an extended animated parody of American Idol, plus games and lots and lots of other features.  In addition to the regular Shrek 2 DVD (and VHS) Dreamworks is also releasing a 4-disk Shrek: The Story So Far, which contains both movies, tons of extras, a Shrek 3-D feature -- all for a suggested retail under $40.
