Blake is the co-creator, with artist Trevor Von Eeden, of Black Lightning, DC’s first Black superhero, as well as Marvel’s Black Goliath (with George Tuska). Her 50-year comics career also includes runs on Ghost Rider, Hawkman, DC’s Star Trek comics, Daredevil, and several Spider-Man titles, as well as stints as a translator, retailer and distributor. She also made a cameo appearance as "Judge Isabella" in the CW series Black Lightning in 2020. She announced she is transgender on February 9, 2025, on Twitter and other social media; the DC Pride story is her first new DC work, and possibly her first new comic, to be published since then.
“When I came out as transgender, the comics community was overwhelmingly loving and supportive,” Blake said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “Being asked to contribute to this anthology was unexpected and so affirming. I’ve done a lot of cool things in my 50-plus years in comics, but this story is one of the things I’m most proud of. I see myself in this story and I hope readers see something of themselves in it. I had a wonderful time writing my story, and I hope the readers enjoy it as much as I did.”
“Master Planner” is conceived in a similar vein to Kevin Conroy's “Finding Batman,” which won the 2022 Eisner Award for Best Short Story, and the 2024 story “Spaces” by Phil Jimenez (see “DC Plans Pride Anthology”).
DC Pride 2025 will be released on June 4, 2025.
