This third edition of the Warhammer: The Horus Heresy upgrades the 2022 edition of the game (see "'Warhammer: The Horus Heresy'") with new units, a rules refresh and more. The 2022 release was based on the classic 7E rules for Warhammer 40,000 (see "'The Horus Heresy Rulebook'"), whereas this third edition improves upon that rules set by adding Challenge Gambits, Tactical Status, and Army Selection rules. The new rules are not compatible with older books, but players can still use their armies from older editions (with the new rules).

The new rules set starts off with a new boxed set release: Warhammer: The Horus Heresy - Age of Darkness: Saturnine. This set features brand-new Saturnine Terminators, accompanied by a Saturnine Dreadnought, as well as a phalanx of Space Marines in MkII Crusade Armor with an Araknae Quad Accelerator in tow. The set also comes with a new rulebook, tokens, dice, a transfer sheet and more. This set can be used to build an army for any of the 18 legions in the new edition of the game.
