Mattel and IDW Publishing have announced
Street Sharks comics based on the animated show that ran from 1994 to 1997 (retitled
Dino Vengers with Street Sharks in 1996). The five-issue limited series, by writer Stephanie Williams and artist Ariel Medel, features four half-shark, half-human brothers, Ripster, Jab, Streex, and Big Slammu, who were created by a mad scientist using a technique known as “gene slamming” and now ride the streets of Fission City on their motorcycles, taking down superpowered lobsters and other menacing chimeras. The first issue will be released in September 2025 with covers by Philip Murphy and Elizabeth Beals, a 1:25 incentive variant by Kevin Anthony Catalan, and a 1:50 variant by Khary Randolph.
Mattel released a set of action figures based on the Street Sharks characters when the show was running, and they launched a new set in 2024 to mark the 30th anniversary of the series.
This is the latest of a wave of comics based on retro animated series, including Oni Press’s Nacelleverse (see “
Oni to Publish Comics Line Tying Into Animation, Toy Properties”).
