Paperback Edition of Eisner Winner Includes Remastered Originals, New Comics, and Bonus Essays
Image Comics will publish a new paperback edition of the groundbreaking
All-Negro Comics, first published in 1947 by journalist Orrin C. Evans. A hardcover edition, edited by Chris Robinson, was funded via a Kickstarter campaign in 2022 and published by Very GOOD Books. It won the 2024 Eisner Award for Best Archival Collection/Project—Comic Books. The new paperback includes the original comics by Orrin C. Evans, George J. Evans Jr., John H.Terrell, William H. Smith, and Leonard Cooper, unabridged and digitally remastered, as well as new comics by modern-day creators and essays that provide background and context for the work. In addition to the original creators, the new edition features work by Eisner Award-winning scholar Dr. Qiana Whitted, David Brothers, Shawn Pryor, Micah Peters, Zipporah Smith, Samantha Guzmán, Deron Bennett, Jasmine Hatcher, Sharean Morishita, Tony Washington, Ray-Anthony Height, Manny Edeko, Domo Stanton, Ryan Marlow, and Robinson.
Evans and a group of colleagues from the recently shuttered Philadelphia Record newspaper formed the All-Negro Comics, Inc., publishing company and published a single issue of the comic. Evans was inducted into the Eisner Awards Hall of Fame in 2014.
All-Negro Comics: America’s First Black Comic Book will be released to comic shops on October 22, 2025, and to bookstores on November 4, with an MSRP of $12.99.
In June Rosarium Publishing published The Adventures of Lion Man, an anthology that included the original Lion Man comic by Orrin C. Evans and his brother, George J. Evans Jr., alongside new comics and artwork by contemporary creators (see “Rosarium Brings Back Early Black Superhero, Lion Man”).
