DC’s streaming service has ordered a live-action take on Doom Patrol. The 13-episode series will go into production later this year and air on DC Universe in 2019.
Doom Patrol, which is based on the comics created by Arnold Drake, Bob Haney, and Bruno Premiani, will be written by Jeremy Carver (Being Human, Supernatural, Frequency). Carver, DC Entertainment CCO Geoff Johns, Greg Berlanti, and Sarah Schechter will executive produce the show, which is produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.
The Doom Patrol debuted in My Greatest Adventure #80 in 1963. The original lineup of super-powered misfits included Robotman, Elasti-Girls, Negative Man, and team leader The Chief. The original lineup was killed off when the first series ended in 1968, but the team has been resurrected several times over the years by Grant Morrison, Rachel Pollack, John Arcudi, John Byrne (see “John Byrne Reboots the Doom Patrol”), Keith Giffen, Gerard Way (see “DC Announces Gerard Way Pop-Up Imprint”), and others. The property was once optioned for a live-action film, but it never materialized (see “Two DC Comics-Based Films Announced”). Doom Patrol will be joining DC Comics Dice Masters as a Team Pack later this year (see “'DC Comics Dice Masters: Justice Campaign Box'”).
Doom Patrol will join previously announced live-action series Swamp Thing (see “Live Action 'Swamp Thing' Planned for DC Digital Platform”), Titans (see “'The Walking Dead' Ratings Slip, Hot Trailer for 'Fahrenheit 451,' Animated 'Rocketeer' And 'Moon Girl,' 'Sabrina' and 'Titans' Casting”), and Young Justice: Outsiders (see “Live-Action 'Titans' Will Air on DC Digital Service”), as well as animated series Harley Quinn(see “Harley Quinn Gets Animated”), in the lineup of DC Universe shows.
