Ahead of New York Comic-Con, Dynamite Entertainment announced the return of two heroes from comics’ past. The publisher has brought in superstar writers Kieron Gillen and Ron Marz for the projects.

Gillen (Star Wars, The Wicked + The Divine) will resurrect Charlton Comics superhero Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt with artist Caspar Wijngaard (Limbo). The first issue of the series, which features covers by Sean Phillips (Criminal), Dave McCaig (American Vampire), Butcher Billy (Barbarella), Paulina Ganucheau (Zodiac Starforce), and Wijngaard, as well as an Atlas Edition variant signed by Gillen, will be in stores in January. Peter Cannon is the orphaned son of an American medical team, who is raised in a Himalayan monastery. The character was created by Pete Morisi for Dick Giordano’s superhero line at Charlton. Dynamite acquired the rights to the character from Morisi’s family in 2012, and released a series written by Steve Darnall and Alex Ross with art by Jonathan Lau (see “'Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt' Returns”).

Turok will also return in January thanks to writer Ron Marz (Green Lantern, Silver Surfer) and artist Robert Castro (Red Sonja, Flash Gordon). The first issue features covers by Bart Sears (Turok), Butch Guice (Captain America), Jeffrey Veregge (Transformers), and Castro. The series will hew closer to the origins of Turok, setting the action in the American Wild West as the Native dinosaur hunter searches for his lost brother. The character first appeared in comics by Western Publishing through Dell Comics and has also appeared in books published by Gold Key, Valiant, and Dark Horse. Valiant acquired the property in 2013 (see “Dynamite Reviving Gold Key Heroes in 2014”).
