Heritage Auctions announced that it will put a PSA Gem Mint 10 Charizard #4 Rare Hologram Trading Card from the Pokemon TCG First Edition Base Set on the auction block at their Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction on January 14-17 in Dallas, Texas.
The year 2020, aside from being a trying year for many people, was also The Year of Charizard. The Charizard #4 Hologram card from the Pokemon TCG First Edition Base Set just kept breathing absolute fire on the collectibles market. The uptrend began in October when rapper Logic paid $220,574 for the card in a Gem Mint 10 (see "Famed Rapper Logic Buys Gem Mint 10 Charizard 'Pokemon' TCG Card At Auction For $220,574") from Iconic Auctions, and continued as Logan Paul picked up a similar Charizard card for $150,000 from a private collector (see "Blazing Hot 'Pokemon' Singles Market May Be Partially a Result of Social Media Hype"). Then, in December, another PSA graded copy of this card went for $350,100 on eBay via a PWCC listing.
The PSA Gem Mint 10 Charizard #4 that is being auctioned off in January is one of 2,627 PSA certified copies of this card. Certified copies of this card are valued at $40,000 according to the PSA SMR Price Guide, but only 120 copies in the PSA certified population are graded as Gem Mint. Thus, they command a significant premium on the open market.
Alongside the Gem Mint 10 Charizard #4, Heritage will also be auctioning off a Gem Mint 9 Charizard #4, from the same set, and another Pokemon 1st Edition Base Set Sealed Booster Box. The hammer dropped on the last box for a record $360,000 (see "Heritage Auctions Sets a New Record Sale Price for a Sealed 'Pokemon 1st Edition' Booster Box"). As of the publication of this article, online bids sit at $82,500.
