Oni Press will bring ancient witchcraft to modern-day Portland in the five-issue creator-owned series Season of the Bruja, by writer Aaron Duran and artist Sara Soler, which will launch in March 2022.

"Season of the Bruja is an exploration of forgotten culture and heritage I’ve been trying to tell for years,” Duran said in the announcement from Oni. He drew on his family’s traditions to create a story of Althalia, a young woman who is a bruja, a powerful magic user descended from a long line that goes back to an ancient Mexican indigenous culture. Althalia has spent her entire life learning magic, tutored and supported by her abuela, until a tragedy from her past shakes her world and sets her on a new path.

Duran is also the writer of Dial “F” for Foodie, a limited series that Scout Comics will publish under its Chispa Latinx comics imprint (see “Scout Comics Adds Latinx Imprint”), and he contributed to Image Comics’ Where We Live, an anthology to benefit the victims of the Las Vegas shooting (see “Image Reveals Creators for ‘Where We Live’”). Soler was the artist for the one-shot Dr. Horrible: Best Friends Forever, published by Dark Horse (see “Joss Whedon’s ‘Dr. Horrible’”).
