Disney/Pixar has released the first teaser poster for Andrew Stanton’s John Carter of Mars, which stars Tyler Kitsch in the title role and debuts on March 9th 2012.  The stylized design includes three letters (J, C, & M) superimposed over an image of the film’s star.  Pixar’s first live-action film is an adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ groundbreaking science fiction novel A Princess of Mars that was published in 1917.  Stanton’s film also features Lynn Collins (True Blood), Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man), Samantha Morton (Minority Report), Ciaran Hinds (Rome), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man), and Mark Strong (Green Lantern).

Strong, who plays Sinestro in Martin Campbell’s Green Lantern, told MTV that Stanton’s John Carter movie would have a very distinctive look since the director is remaining true to the roots of ERB’s work in the late Victorian novels of H.G. Wells and other visionaries: “It’s science fiction from a Victorian point of view.  Because Edgar Rice Burroughs novels were at the turn of the century, and his perception of space was very different from ours.  The Martians, for example, wear breast plates and swords and helmets with wings on them. I think that’s what’s going to distinguish it visually.”

Dynamite Entertainment has scheduled its third series of comics based on the ERB novels (see “Warlord of Mars: Fall of Barsoom”), while Dark Horse has collected vintage DC and Marvel John Carter series, and Marvel Comics announced its own new John Carter of Mars series (see “It’s Getting Crowded on the Red Planet”).
