Property Continues Resurgence

Harmony Gold has licensed Robotech for videogames to be produced by TDK Mediactive and Mattel ) for Xbox, Gamecube, PS2, and Gameboy Advance. Design will be by Vicious Cycle. Robotech is another 80s property (see 'Top Movie/TV Merchandise Stories of 2001') that's been selling well in DVD collections (see 'Top 10 Cool Anime') and is now coming around again in other ways as well. Toynami has toys (see 'Robotech Leads Toynami Line'), and other products are undoubtedly not far behind. The videogames represent additional exposure for the property, which can only feed the revival and the sales based on it.
The announcement of this license is further indication that any rights disputes over Macross in Japan (see 'Macross Rights Litigation in Japan') are not affecting the Harmony-Gold produced Robotech. Harmony Gold also released a statement last month, stating that because the Japanese decision applied only to Japanese rights to Macross, it was unaffected.
