Games Workshop has begun opening smaller stores in the UK and Continental Europe, which it calls its “one-man format,” according to its most recent annual report (see “Games Workshop Improves Performance” for the basics of the report).  The new stores have more limited hours, so that a single operator can run them.  The smaller stores offer introductory games, painting lessons and other hobby activity, but do so with lower property costs, staffing levels, and capital investments, allowing profitable operations in much smaller towns than the company’s typical target markets.

The company was bullish on the prospects for this new format.  “We believe we can roll this format out into many more locations in our largest markets, thereby expanding our global customer base further than we had though previously,” the company said.

Apparently the chances of GW hiring a woman to manage one of its stores are low enough that it doesn't see any point in calling them "one-person stores."
