Sony Pictures/Columbia Tristar Home Video is offering a Spider-Man Limited Edition Collector's Gift Set, which includes a widescreen DVD version of the film (and all the extras) plus a DVD of Stan Lee's Mutants, Monsters, and Marvels (see 'Kevin Smith, Stan Lee In DVD Retrospective'), a replica of Peter Parker's first comic book appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15, a replica film cel and other assorted goodies. All things considered it's quite a package and the retail of $49.95 is actually quite reasonable for this sort of special edition DVD.
For fans who haven't already purchased the Kevin Smith's documentary Stan Lee's Mutants, Monsters, and Marvels DVD ($24.95 retail), this collector's gift set could be a great holiday item. The key for independent pop culture retailers will be whether the mass-market discounters will carry this sku. Given the popularity of the film, the answer may well be yes, but on the other hand those retailers will certainly be stocking both the widescreen and pan and scan versions of the film and may not want to add a third sku, so independent retailers should pay attention to an item which should have a strong appeal to Spidey fans. The Limited Edition Collector's Gift Set hits the streets with the two other versions of the $400 million blockbuster on November 2, supported by a major ad campaign (see 'Mega Campaigns for Q4 DVDs Create Merchandising Opportunities').
