Matthew Vaughn’s adaptation of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.’s Kick-Ass scored a home entertainment trifecta by topping the DVD, Blu-ray, & rental charts during its debut week.  Kick-Ass, which earned almost $50 million at the domestic box office, scored the highest “box office-to DVD conversion rate” of any major film released this quarter—in other words it accumulated more home entertainment dollars per dollars earned at the box office.  The “R” rated superhero spoof is obviously reaching a wider audience on DVD than it did in the theaters, and this boffo home entertainment debut should result in additional graphic novel sales—Marvel already sold more than 100,000 copies of Kick-Ass in the run-up to the film’s release (see “100K Copies of Kick-Ass”).

As ICv2 pointed out in its review of the Kick-Ass home entertainment release (see “DVD Round-Up: Week of August 3rd”), the Blu-ray/Combo Pack edition of the film includes a substantial 4-part documentary on the making of the film that isn’t included in the regular Kick-Ass DVD.  Lionsgate recognized that the Blu-ray is now the “collector’s format” and didn’t bother to create a 2-disc regular DVD “collector’s edition” of Kick-Ass.  The result of this forward thinking was that 49% of the first week sales of Kick-Ass were on Blu-ray, which ties it with Avatar for the highest percentage of BD sales for a new release.

Fox’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which is based on Jeff Kinney’s quasi-graphic novel YA series, came in second on the DVD charts selling 88% of Kick-Ass’s total, but finished a distant third on the Blu-ray chart.
