IDW announced a raft of new projects at WonderCon this weekend, including a Marvel collection, new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics, an Anne Rice adaptation, and a new Parker edition. IDW’s new Marvel relationship is for “Artist’s Editions” of classic Marvel comics. This program builds on IDW’s first Artist’s Edition, The Rocketeer: Artist’s Edition released last year at San Diego Comic-Con (see “The Rocketeer: Artist’s Edition”).
Walter Simonson’s The Mighty Thor: Artist’s Edition will be released this July in the same format, a 12”x17” $100 hardcover (same size as the original art), shot from the original b/w art for key issues. As was the case for Rocketeer, the Thor collection will be printed in color to capture all of the nuances of the original art, including the white-out corrections and blue pencil notations.
Walter Simonson’s The Mighty Thor: Artist’s Edition will collect Thor #337-#340, Simonson’s first Thor arc, and Thor #360-#362, Simonson’s choice for the second.
IDW also announced a long-term relationship with Nickelodeon to publish comics and graphic novels based on the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. Nickelodeon acquired the rights to Turtles from Mirage Group and 4Kids in 2009 (see “Nick Buys TMNT”). A new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic series will premiere this summer.
Nickelodeon will premiere a new 26-episode TMNT cartoon series late next year (see “New TMNT Toon in Q4 2012”). A feature film by sister company Paramount is also in the works (see “’Iron Man’ Scribes on New ‘Turtles’ Pic”).
IDW has announced another relationship with a bestselling author: Anne Rice. IDW will launch a new six-issue adaptation of Rice’s Servant of the Bones in August. The new series will be written by MariahMcCourt, with art by Renae DeLiz and Ray Dillon. Servant of the Bones tells the story of Azriel, beginning in the time of Isaiah and Jeremiah from the Bible, moving to Europe during the time of the Black Death, and on to modern day in New York City.
IDW also announced a new collection of Darwyn Cooke Parker stories, derived from Richard Stark’s Parker novels. Parker: The Martini Edition will be a 344-page 9” x 13” slipcased hardcover collecting The Hunter, The Outfit, and new 8-page Parker story by Cooke, and another 57-pages of new content including sketches and preliminaries by the artist, with commentary accompanying.
